Fall Election in Canada

Why do Harper and Dion insist on the tough talk when they know there are several by-elections coming up? Beats me, like most Canadians I’ve tuned out about 2 months ago.

Here is my suggestion, grassroot Liberals should really put the pressure to go to the polls (just in case someone gets cold feet) no matter what happens in the by-elections because:

1. If Dion looses, the Liberals can finally get a better leader.

2. If Dion wins a minority, anyone is better then Harper.

Its really a win-win for the Liberal party. If the call is made as soon parliament returns, Canada’s elections could potentially be right around the time Obama spends hundreds of millions on ads that are bound make a dent north of the border as well. Santa might come early this year for those who have been good.

Russophobia

While we are on the subject of Georgia, after reading hundreds of stories in the past week, I can’t help but feel like there is a lot of misconceptions towards Russia and its people. I don’t believe the Russian government or the people are interested in escalating any conflicts but it will respond harshly if provoked. Russia isn’t a democratic country yet but it is far from the cold war days of USSR. Conflict is bad for business. The reporting about Russia really needs to turn a new page, I read somewhere that “many Russians” are upset about how the cold war ended and want round two. Thats simply not true. The cold war ended without firing any nuclear weapons, thats all anyone really cares about. Russian media spun the story and said that Russia ended the conflict in its favor. US media spun it and said that they won the cold war. Very few people in Russia actually know or care what the US media says, CNN doesn’t play on Russian TV screens. I think most Russians and Americans are actually just glad the cold war is behind us.

Simplifying today’s Russia through the Russophobic lens from the cold war is like reporting about Canadian political affairs as if its still a British colony. Lets move on from all the cold war talk, even McCain agrees.

Peace in Georgia

Russian forces secured a buffer around South Ossetia and Abkhazia and didn’t go further then that. The long term solution should be up left up to the current negotiating process, I don’t know what the outcome will be but I believe there is scope for an agreement. Actions speak louder then words. If Medvedev or Putin wanted, they could have easily gone all the way to the capital of Georgia and ask questions later. But they didn’t because Medvedev and Putin do not have those type of ambitions, its bad for their oil business.

Explosion in Toronto

I heard a loud blast last night that woke me up, it turns out to be an explosion in a propane facility resulting in a 1.6-kilometre radius evacuation, highway closures and event cancelations throughout the city. My heart goes out to the people who were injured in the blast around the area, its been reported that a firefighter was rushed to the hospital without vital signs. I can only imagine the hard work and dedication it took to put out a fire of that magnitude and I am thankful to the brave firefighters who put their lives at risk to protect this city.

Alright, you don’t have to say it, I realize I’ve been kinda preachy these past few days with the wise comments about love and new beginnings, I’ll blame this one on the weather, its gorgeous outside. No more preaching from me. And as for you, the summer is passing by, the sun is shining, and the birds are singing, why are you reading this blog instead of enjoying it? I am a pretty young man and even I remember the days we never had empty soccer fields or unused playgrounds. These days its ps3 this and tv that, by the way, that second last episode in The Sopranos was great. I also hear Entourage season 5 will start up in Sept. And the new Facebook design is terrible, geez. Anyway, you should get outside more, its beautiful.
