This day we take a moment and remember the sacrifices made by so many brave souls who remind us about the meaning of honor, sacrifice and love for family and country. Its the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War. I am reminded how much we take for granted in our daily lives in Canada: peace, liberty, opportunity, prosperity. We owe an infinite amount of gratitude and appreciation to the generations that came before us. We must remember that always.

Let’s also remember that it’s the rich who make the wars — for greedy imperialist reasons — and largely the poor who fight the wars, convinced to do so with ideological distractions about “freedom” and “patriotism.” Most wars aren’t fought for “freedom” and “love of country.” They’re fought for profit. Let remembrance honour the people who made the ultimate sacrifice, yes. But let remembrance also remind us that wars are not the creations of everyday peace-loving people; they are geopolitical bloodbaths that ruling classes create for the most despicable of reasons. We need to shake ourselves from the mythology of “dying for freedom.” In most cases, we die so that our masters can gain more power and wealth.
