There was a time when black & white photography was more popular then color. It was actually a bit of a controversy in those days, color photos were mainly used for commercial purposes and many photographers didn’t take it seriously. Today, color photography clearly dominates due to its obvious advantages. Yet, in this case, I think old school photographers had a good point. Its very difficult for color to match the level of contrast and character you can achieve with black & white for shots like this.
