There were allegations that Canadian officials contributed to torture-by-proxy in the case of three Canadian men. Through an inquiry started in 2006, a retired Supreme Court of Canada Justice Frank Iacobucci found:
The inquiry did find that the three men were tortured in foreign prisons and that the mistreatment may have “resulted indirectly from several actions of Canadian officials” who were “deficient” in some of their actions, even if that had not been any civil servant’s overriding intent. - Globe and Mail
So what does the Conservative government do now?
1. First, I guess they will follow the recommendations proposed by the inquiry to prevent this from ever happening again, right? Nope. Justice Iacobocci wasn’t permitted to make recommendations due to limitations in the terms of reference. Yes, we paid for an inquiry that can’t tell us what to do differently.
2. Well, I guess the Minister should hold a press conference and say that they will read the report carefully and work really hard to make sure this doesn’t ever happen again, right? Nope. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says that everything is just fine, he already fixed it. Stockwell Day claims he fixed it before the former Justice Iacobucci even discovered what mistakes happened. This must be what Harper meant by government efficiency.
3. Well, at least government apologized to the three Canadians who were tortured, right? Nope. Its not like we had anything to do with it.
Unbelievable stuff. I hope the three Canadians continue their fight for justice in this matter. I worry that this could happen again because Conservatives are clearly not taking this seriously enough. Yet one more reason why Harper’s team needs to be given the boot as soon as possible. Change is coming, I hope.
