United Nation calls 2008 the International Year of Potato. Something those who care about global poverty should pay attention to because it can play an important role in solving the world’s food crisis, a hidden treasure indeed and here is why. When I was younger, I used to help my parents grow potatoes in Russia on a little piece of land that we owned. My grandparents also grew potatoes on their farm. When times were hard, it is how most families, including mine, overcame those times. It’s easy to grow, can be grown almost anywhere, and offers a pretty good source of carbohydrates, protein, vitamin C, and potassium. Its no wonder why potatoes can be found in most traditional Russian foods. With growing food prices, potatoes can be a good alternative for impoverished countries and thats why the potato deserves its own song:
