Alright, having to write an affidavit because the organization I was part of has to go over a few legal bumps on the way student union heaven is a good way get back into reality from what seemed liked a dream vacation in Cuba.
- As I was browsing through the hundreds of pages of my fellow Canadian bloggers, it seems to focus around how bad/good the Green Shift plan is, which tells me this issue is getting some good traction and is likely to be the defining issue in the upcoming election, I know some of you are saying “duh.”
- Speaking of legal challenges, take a look at this Statement of Claim from Green Shift Inc., an environmental company who claims to own the GREEN SHIFT trade mark and is suing the Liberal party for about $8,750,000 in total plus the cost of the action and whatever other costs that can be attached. They claim, as an environmental company, that their reputation is being significantly damaged due to the Liberals using that term to describe their environment platform. I am not a lawyer so I don’t know if their claims hold water but here is something that no one seems to be talking about, what if Green Shift Inc. wins? If this is a possibility that means the Liberals now have a second deadline before which they call the election. One, is Harper’s fixed election date for October 19 2009 and the second would be the final hearing on this trade mark dispute. I say just get it over with already.
- What’s this, some NDPers want to drop the “new” and change the name to Democratic Party? Even the writer in the left wing Rabble site seems to agree. I say the party needs a lot more than a face lift. Considering all the blunders by Dion and Harper, NDP managed to stay rock solid in the polls. I can definitely see this name-changing-issue turn into a food fight between the ultra left and those who want to win elections. Some will want it named Social Democratic Party, others Democratic Party or as the Rabble writer suggested: Citizens Party. Hmmm, I wonder what immigrants who volunteer for NDP would think? I say, if NDP wants to win elections anywhere, they have to change a lot more than the name. Doing a lot more grassroots organizing would be a start before trying to claim comparisons with Barack Obama’s campaign. When I heard Jack made that comparison to a room full of student leaders, I almost fell out of my chair because I’ve seen both campaigns in action there is no comparison.
