Ontario and Quebec sign a “historic” deal on June 2nd to work together to cut down greenhouse emissions, in part through a cap-and-trade system (a.k.a. permit trading), which is actually an aggressive action towards Harper and Dion. Harper because he got left out, Dion because a form of carbon taxes might be his preferred choice, as leaked by some bloggers. The media were all over but I am a little more skeptical, that hope that Ontario would get out of our Economic slowdown by the next quarter that would make it easier to implement such programs might have just become history as well because of this event:
GM announced that it will close 4 plants, including one in Ontario (bye bye Chevy Silverado), the workers are now protesting that decision. GM really messed this one up because they just signed a new contract and the union has a pretty good argument: “GM negotiated in bad faith.” - Chris Buckley. In solidarity, go gettem! I hope the two events aren’t related because Ontario has given plenty of loans to the company over the years to keep the jobs in Ontario.
I like the fact that our provinces are talking about reducing greenhouse emissions but I hope we see a plan implemented in the very near future.
