Over the last few months, we have seen a coalition of a few white supremacy groups, a few conservatives and a few Muslim fearing writers try to run a campaign to shut down the Human Rights Commission, an agency that could potentially take action against them. Today, the Ontario Human Rights Commission delivered what I think is a reasonable conclusion.
“We are concerned about the content … We think it fosters stereotypes and has a negative impact on the (Muslim) communities,” chief commissioner Barbara Hall said but magazines are not covered under the rights code.
After carefully studying the articles my self, while distasteful, prejudice and stereotypical, armed with google search I also thought that Steyn’s articles in Maclean’s didn’t meet the criteria as others like Ernst Zundel (holocaust denier) have. “If you said these things (in the article) in a workplace, we would certainly take the complaint and it is very possible we could find discrimination in the workplace,” Hall said. - source .
We’ll see what happens in BC soon but I suspect little of major consequence. In the mean time, I should start working on Mark Steyn Argues Against Tolerance and Multiculturalism II, a sequel to the first part.
Update: HRC released a statement.
