Now that the there are allegations about Conservatives offering a $1,000,000 insurance policy bribe to and independent British Columbia MP Chuck Cadman, Liberals are rethinking their plan to support the Conservative government on the budget.
“If this story is not discredited substantially in the next 48 hours, I am sure that a number of our colleagues will be very keen come Monday to pull the plug on this (minority) government,” said Liberal MP Garth Turner (Halton).
Now I have to say that offering a dieing man a bribe in exchange for a vote would be a new low for Harper and Conservatives and if the allegations are proven to be true… Harper better buckle down because its going to be a rough ride, worse then the sponsorship scandal.
However, if the story is not proven to be true, even if its not discredited…. for Dion to suddenly change his mind and vote against the budget would be considered by many Canadians as “opportunist politics” focused on polls and how badly your opponent is getting trashed in the papers vs actual issues that Canadians care about.
If the Tories go down the tube, it should be over issues like the Environment (a top concern among Canadians according to the polls). The allegations about Conservative bribes should be developed by the media, not the Liberals or NDP and could be used to even the playing field on the whole “leadership” and “credibility” issue.
