The first statement, that Muslims are “expanding like mosquitoes,” was made by a European imam. Steyn was just quoting him.

Did you actually look at what Harper’s actually published?

It is not quoting Mark Steyn at all, but a document that misquotes Steyn, misconstrues what he says and, after manufacturing evidence, calls him an Islamophobe.

Harper’s ironic quotation marks in the top paragraph should have tipped you off to how the editors of the magazine actually think o f this screed.

The intent of the CIC document is to shut down freedom of speech by abiding by the old adage of giving a dog a bad name to hang it.

I clarified that it is a CIC document, I don’t believe Harper endorses those views.

It seems like the comments about Muslims expanding are not his own, therefor I will take that particular comment down, there are plenty more where that came from.

Mark Steyn and others have written considerably worst things then that so it really does not change the point of the post.

Yes it does. Try quoting him in context, and giving references next time.

Umm… the “Super Bowl” reference (in fact, much of the Harper’s piece) is actually the summary of the plot of a book - “Prayers for the Assassin” by Robert Ferrigno.

Mark Steyn is ignorant and a hate-monger; however, in order to give your readers fair and accurate information, you should disclose the entire picture.

The quotes you’ve listed are assertions Styen is making but rather aspects of the plot of a play, Prayers For the Assassin by Robert Ferrigno, which is a novel (fictional) that Styen wrote a review about in his column. In reviewing a novel, a play etc, its customary to cite aspects of the plot, which is what Steyn was doing.

In addition, Macleans magazine is under attack for publishing a piece called “I Begged To Confess”, the story about a Canadian citizen who was raped and tortured in a Saudi prison. Macleans is being taken before the HRC for telling the story of this man’s horrific ordeal, because apparently it “depicts Saudi Arabia and Muslims in a very negative light” …give me a break.

mygif
February 29th, 2008 @11:29 pm

Heh, a good half of the quotations in the Harper’s publication are from a review Mark Steyn did of a book, in which he describes its plot (ok, so others have pointed this out.)

Why is it that those who favor censorship seem so ignorant about the stuff they want to censor?

Go burn a book or something, sheesh!

I have asked a friend to get a list of the publications & their links from CIC with respect to those quotes, I’ll publish it as soon as I get it.

Mark Steyn has plenty of articles where he is hating on Muslims… I have published one here already:

http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=20070205_140131_140131&source=srch

Where he describes a conspiracy to make Muslims seem friendlier then they really are.

I plan on publishing a lot more so stay tuned.

P.S. I haven’t questioned Steyn’s freedom of speech. So far, Macleans is the only one that is censoring anyone because it rejects anyone from the Muslim community to actually respond to any of the Islamophobic claims.

Before you start gathering more “evidence” from the CIC, you might consider that their president, Mohamed Elmasry, thinks any Israeli over the age of 18 is a legitimate target for suicide bombers.

It was not in any way censorship. MacLean’s Magazine publisher Ken Whyte said that he would rather close and go bankrupt rather than submit to the Muslim complaintants demand to have the magazine allow them a minimum of five full pages rebuttal, full editorial control, full artwork control PLUS the cover of the damned magazine.Whyte had published 27 letters to the editor on the column in question and they were lucky he didn’t just tell them to go to hell. That demand was equal to extortion really and they really should just go and start their own magazine.

Vlad,

I am sorry but you are on the wrong side of the argument here, as is HArpers. They have misidentified the quotes. Steyn did not say these things. It was a review of a book and a quote from a imam.

Please re-read.

The bottom line is that you are free to publish anything you wish to publish. The rest of us demand the same rights that you enjoy, no matter how “offensive” it may be to you and others.

Sure Jim. Doesn’t matter how offensive it gets ONLY if its related to Muslims. If its something against Jews or Africans, dude the author will get fired immediately!! Right!! There is a fine line b/w freedom of speech and oppression and the media keeps moving more towards oppression of Muslims by publishing hateful commentary about them. Phobic people should get some therapy, I think, instead of being allowed to write in newspapers, magazines etc. :-)

I also read that the Imam made the statement about Muslims spreading like mosquitoes. Either the guy is being silly, needs some language classes or his words are taken out of context. If he did make this statement, then WOH! what was he thinking?

But quite frankly, after thinking about it, I find it funny that he said it but offensive that Steyn quoted it. Its like the “nigga” thing. You must have read that newspaper story where the teacher called a student the N-word…….

Also, I think that the context in which Steyn said this is different than that where the Imam stated it.

Later days :-)
Take care

mygif
March 7th, 2008 @11:58 pm

If an imam says it, it’s funny. If Steyn quotes him saying it, it’s offensive. Right.

The only one whose words are being taken out of context here is Mark Steyn.

Keep on banging the islamophobic drum retard, The truth is muslims are in the West because its an easier life and fools like you ensure they can have their cake and eat it.

The west does more for muslims than muslims ,its that simple, and if the poor dears dont want to get with the program, ie embrace freedom, then they can always go live the sweet life in Yemen, Syria, Iran or some other muslim hellhole.

Jon Said,

Of course I discriminate against Muslims. I’m a Christian. On the basis of my religion, I also discriminate against Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and secular humanists. Reasonable people work from presuppositions, but we don’t share the same presuppositions. There is only one God, and the Messiah is He.

I also try to love my enemies. I fight them with the Bible, the sword of the Spirit, because only it can cut through complacent unbelief and touch the heart. I thus use language (speech), but the language must be made appealing and convincing by a humble, holy life–which no one who reads this comment can know and judge.

Those who “walk the talk” will die for it. At least, so they think and so they learn. They are but saved sinners, after all.

Vlad says, “I have read the Quaran just as I have read the Bible and I can tell you that unless you quote different things out of context (this applies both to the Quaran & Bible), both texts represent peaceful religions and preach peace as most religions do.”

What is a peaceful religion? The Lord Jesus Christ said that He did not come to bring peace but a sword (Matt. 10:34). He came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. If a man’s enemies are his own relatives, then he might reasonably expect to find them outside his family too.

Christianity is a peaceful religion because it brings peace with God. This God put hatred between men (Gen. 3;15) right from the beginning of history. This hatred resulted in constant warfare between monotheistic Israel and the neighbouring nations. It also kept Christianity pure, allowing the truth to continue. In the New Testament, new civilizations continued to foment wars over religion, especially wars between Christians and Muslims.

There are yet today brave Christians, Christians braver than I, who go into Muslim countries to invite Muslims to surrender to the Lord Jesus. They do not need the approval of the United Nations or of the Muslim countries to which they go or of their own countries which they leave. These missionaries have the approval of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Vlad says, “The truth is that Islam is a religion of peace and there are 1.5 billion practicing Muslims who are just as peaceful as your average Christian or Jew. Islam and the Quaran condemn violence against innocent people, therefore those who do harm innocent life are not following Islam.”

Has Vlad ever wrote against the current abortion holocaust in Canada? Thousand or millions of babies have already died. I congratulate Vlad in “condemn[ing] violence against innocent people.” There is no greater example of violence than induced abortion.

Vlad, those ‘quotations’ you cite have been comprehensively shown to be false.

If you have any integrity you will acknowledge and amend your comments.

This sort of disinformation is far too widely characteristic of the ‘progressive’ side of the argument. It makes me wonder if their arguments are so weak that they have to rely on distortions, inventions and ad hominem slurs.

mygif
Jon Said,

The abortion holocaust in Canada is a direct result of the relatively new religion (in the West) of sexism. This religion began with “free love” in the 1960s. Feminism, with its emphasis on “my body, my choice” is a related religion. Sexists will do anything to satisfy their god of sex. They will murder their own children, expose themselves and their loved ones to deadly diseases, and ruin their own countries. Historically sexism has been a sign of the end of a civilization.

This is why we need free speech, to let the deceitfulness blossom in public view.

This has been corrected repeatedly, but in our new age it’s enough to accuse, and then it gets recycled by the clueless.

Things like this should be posted/corrected on Snopes, but that won’t stop people who refuse to check sources.

Enjoy the delusion.

Vlad has, alas - though no doubt from good intentions and righteous motivation - publicly impaled himself on his own petard. Quite a feat, given that the Indo-European roots of “petard’ refer to a loud discharge of intestinal gas, although it has come to be understood pricipally as part of the proverbial phrase meaning ‘to blow oneself up with one’s own bomb; to be undone by one’s own devices.’

I doubt anybody takes much pleasure from seeing Vlad or any other person, even Warren Kinsella, squirm in the wake of such public self-undoing. But it’s even worse when such someones don’t have either the wit or cojones to recognize or admit their folly. Give it a rest, Vlad. Long past time you gave your grey matter a chance to get a little oxygen.

Canada is a multi-cultural country and those, like Mark Steyn, who continue to spread hate and prejudice against fellow Canadians will continue to be on the loosing side of the argument.

I certainly stand by my comments and plan on posting plenty more because I believe in speaking up against hate and discrimination.

Those who choose to defend Mark Steyn and those like him, discredit them selves by defending Islamophobic remarks. You are free to have your opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts & truths.

Reading the articles I would remind all of those who are participating in this blog page is that Steyn simply has an opinion. It is merely that! He is not “hating ” muslims, only showing that there are multiple versions of the interpretation of islam. Just as there are multiple versions of the interpretation of christianity and other religions. He comments on various Imams and the show little mosque on the prairie (which can be humourous as well as provocative in terms of thinking about your neighbour.)
My view of this whole religious issue is that it revolves around economics, and the religious rhetoric is used to manipulate emotions to influence individuals in their thinking. Most individuals of any religion or non religion are content to carry on with their lives, work at their jobs, and feed and educate their children in a non discriminatory fashion. As for the religious fanatics, they are content to keep tipping the balance in their favour, thinking that terror or fear will make a difference.
We will probably find at the end of the day that 99.99% of the population will agree that they are idiots, but do not have the energy to completely eliminate their ability to create problems.
However, the last article on religion that I read reminded me that Ishamel and Isaac were both sons of Abraham! Uh… what are we fighting about?
Isn’t it time for a big family reunion?
