There seems to be a sentiment within some circles that Dion’s amendment will end the combat mission. Dion has clarified that in an interview before and now in a press release:
This new mission is no longer defined as a proactive counter-insurgency mission where the point is to seek and destroy the insurgents. But we will not tie the hands of our military and say that they cannot engage in any military action in order to defend themselves or those they must protect. - Liberal.ca
While the new mission won’t be defined as a counter-insurgency mission, the motion does not mean that active seek and destroy missions won’t continue for security purposes, thats up to the military to decide.
