Ha ha … Godwin’s Law comes into play right in the first post :)

“”As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.”"

Having trouble understanding the difference between “race” and “culture”, are we?

from the desk I’m sitting at the most denigrating and crapped on religion is christianity. thanks for putting freedom of speech in quotes just to let everyone know the contempt you have for the very idea that people should be allowed to speak their minds.

I find your obtuse opinion and distorted perspective offensive to a minority identity group (ration thinkers)…but I fully support your right to express it…mark me in as a Steynite.

Shouldn’t this blog be more properly named”VladTheLogicImpaler.com”? Because what else can one make of frothings such as “valid opinions”?

Opinions do no require validity or even acceptability. The arguments buttressing them do require validity if those opinions are to prove persuasive. And as we have seen in the Steyn and Levant cases, bureaucrats appear ill-equipped to act as arbiters of either validity or acceptability.

I’m a homosexual and Mark Steyn speaks for me. I love freedom of speech. People in Canada are free to call me whatever they want, and I can’t tell them to go straight to hell. The problem is when they get out there machetes or nooses for the gays- like they do in Saudi Arabia and many other Islamic countries. Mark Steyn is actually a champion for gays.

Cool arguments Vlad. I find them logical as well. Keep it up inshaallah.

Bill: I don’t see how Vlad’s arguments are distorted? I personally find them really rational.

Let A=Jews/African Americans
Let B=phobic
Let C=Muslims

Vlad’s arguments go as follows:

If A, then not B
A=C
Therefore If C then not B

Well, that’s the way I see it. What is irrational about this argument?

Interesting feedback, but I was hoping that someone who disagrees with me would try to answer the question in the title of the post.

Vlad,

No one has answered the question in the title of the post because you are attempting to set up a straw man argument.

The article cannot be about Jews or African-Americans (any more than it can be about Buddhists, Hindus, or B’nai B’rith) because Jews and African-Americans do not blow up innocent civilians in places like New York, Madrid, London, Baghdad, Bali, Kandahar, Kabul, Nairobi, and Buenos Aires. Jews and African-Americans do not saw the heads off innocent civilians live on TV. Jews and African-Americans do not call for the destruction of Western Civilization and the establishment of a global caliphate. Jews and African-Americans do not promise to wipe a sovereign state off the map or drive its inhabitants into the sea. Jews and African-Americans do not murder their daughters for having boyfriends or for not wearing a hijab. Jews and African-Americans do not stone women to death for being raped. Jews and African-Americans do not celebrate death or raise their children to be “martyrs”.

Now, you may argue that these acts are not representative of Islam, but are instead the acts of an extremist minority. That may be true. But it is also true that that minority is not insignificant and that it claims to act in the name of Islam. Meanwhile, the supposedly moderate majority spends more time whining about Islamophobia than battling the extremists in its midst.

I’m a Christian, and Mark Steyn doesn’t necessarily speak for me. I believe in limited freedom of speech; freedom is always limited. However, to say that I agree much more with Steyn than with Glebov (author of this article) is an understatement. The title of Glebov’s post, as Boris has already observed, compares apples with oranges. Jews and African Americans suffer on the basis of their ancestry, but Muslims and homosexuals experience opposition because of their religion or behaviour. I’m a Christian, and so I strongly discriminate against Muslims and homosexuals–in so far as they identify with their false religion or errant behaviour–and seek to win them to the Christ who brings peace with God but a sword between men. And yes, my church also preaches against Jews and secular humanists in so far as they promote their respective false religions. (Most Jews today tolerate such expression as being “freedom of religion” and “freedom of speech.”) I don’t myself subscribe to the politically correct notion of tolerance; at least, I try not to. I am not an Islamist or sexist. I am not first of all a Canadian. I am, please God, a Christian.

“What is irrational about this argument?”, asks Arzoo.
Well, Arzoo (Vlad, you might want to pay attention here as well…), that would be the “A=C” bit.

Now think hard, what’s the difference between “Jew/African American” and “Muslim”? It’ll dawn on you eventually.

As Khurram and his colleagues state, the authors of the complaint against McLean Magazine, ” It is suggested that the remedy for discriminatory and hateful speech is more and better speech, and an open marketplace of ideas. We agree, in principle. However, we can have faith in this proposed remedy only if our media organizations - as the primary facilitators of national discourse - are prepared to include the views of identifiable communities when those communities are the subject of discussion. If our media were to assume this responsibility, we would no longer have to live with an awkward trade-off of free speech for the rights of minorities in our multicultural society: We could have more free speech and more minority rights.”

Whether you be Boris, Chris, Jon, or anonymous, one of the tenents you subscribe to is “Freedom of Speech”, or do you? I can only see your discussions leading toward intolerance of others expressing their freedom to speech, or more yet, their opinion, and having only one view be tolerated, which is your own. How can that be objective or even intelligent.

I congratulate Vlad Glebov for posting his views, for having a blog, and for being public about the racism and Islamophobia that exists. People like Vlad, can make a change by brining about awareness, and change. Thank you, Vlad.

Jew, African American, Muslim, Homosexual, WHATEVER… this is Canada right? If you decided that this is the country that you want to live in (assuming you came to live here) or you were born into this environment, better start learning to deal with it! Because of such a diverse environment you will always have people with different opinions, SO WHAT? Does that mean we will right away scream racism or Islamophobia? I think that its just a way people use in order to attract attention while not being tolerant themselves of other’s opinions, trying to shut people up while preaching equal rights. You have them, they are given to you here in Canada! What is not provided, however, is tolerance for other peoples opinions, that you have find within yourself. There are individuals that discriminate based on race, religion, appearance, IT HAPPENS daily! The fact of the matter is, that this discrimination is not widespread, but only reflects views of small groups against other groups. WE ALL DO IT! The Muslims do it, the Jews do it, African American and Homosexuals do it themselves. Maybe the lesson here is that the less tolerable you are, the easier irritated you will be, hence the drama effect that is sometimes missed in our lives is easily created. Leave it alone and find other avenues to invest all this energy in. Then when the spotlight is not on you, and there is no more interest, you can celebrate it with a parade downtown somewhere between “The Pride” or “Caribana”.
