For weeks, the mac tech blogs have been buzzing and creating hype about the latest keynote speech by Steve Jobs. For those of you that missed the keynote on Apple’s new tech goodies, you can catch it here.
But is it all that innovative?
iPhone & iTouch Updates:
The ability to locate your self without GPS is pretty impressive on the iPhone & iTouch, but its an innovation who’s credit should really be attributed to Google & Skyhook. The rest of the updates seemed good but not news worthy, hackers have been customizing and releasing similar software for iPhone’s for some time now, hardly innovative.
iTunes Movie Rentals
New for iTunes and for a price of 2.99-4.99, this will surely make a dent in Blockbuster thats stuck in the dark ages by offering mail-in DVD rentals. However, this is not new, plenty of sites have offered $2.99 movie downloads which you can keep for life as opposed to 24 hours.
Apple does introduce greater convenience by offering it on iTunes, easy sync with apple’s portable devices, and pretty impressive features on apple TV. However, once again, you can do all that by simply plugging in your laptop to a TV and watch a movie that you downloaded for $2.99 or for free (if you know where to look).
Easier with iTunes, but hardly “revolutionary” as Steve Jobs puts it.
Macbook Air
This macbook looks pretty sleek but I would not trade in your other Macbook just yet. I would say its for users who have a real fetish when it comes to how thin your laptop is. The Macbook Pro is 1 inch and is more powerful, do you really need a laptop thinner then 1 inch? Unless you plan to use it as a frisby, I would not be able to justify paying $1800 for the Macbook Air thats considerably less powerful then the Macbook Pro that goes for 1999. The regular Macbook is slightly thicker but starts at only $1099 and also outperforms the Macbook Air on some specifications such as processor speed and hard drive space. Macbook Air is lighter (3 pounds) if you really care about that.
So, a lot of hype about this laptop but I would not buy it. And only one USB outlet? Pfff
Overall, I would say good improvements but not as revolutionary or innovative as last time, but I guess everyone’s expectations are set pretty high after the last release of the iPhone. And the stock market shows it, Apple stocks went down after the keynote address by about 6%.
I should note that while I am slightly disappointed in the keynote announcements, all these products are still considerably greater then any PC product out there and I would say Apple is the lesser of two evils.
