Also, according to this, Local 1587 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, GO Bus workers, are likely to strike affecting 30,000 passengers that are transported by the 1,800. The strike is said to be mainly over wages and job security. If the strike affects the operations of GO Transit stations this will affect about 165,000 commuters every day. 48 hour notice condition was accepted by the union so it look like the strike is inevitable, although the vote is still to take place within the next couple of days.
The union was told there is no more money and so they will have to do whatever they have to do. However, according to this article, 400 Million is going to be injected. How can GO Transit not have any money to avoid the strike. Clearly there is a will within the provincial government to support our transportation system.
A lot of people’s critical transportation abilities are at stake, I know many students that will be affected and won’t be able to find alternative routes. I call on politicians and negotiators to get back to talks with the unions, find the money, and avert this strike!
