Leberal Leader, Stéphane Dion is doing some house keeping by switching Ruszkowski for Leslie Swartman for the position of Liberal spokesperson. Not the first and perhaps not the last shake up before elections. But when are these elections happening and with so much attention (at parliament hill) being focused on the Mulroney vs Schreiber dealings, surely this means “deja-vu” scenario except this time around the tables have turned and the Liberals are surely going to benefit from this scandal…. right?
I don’t think thats the case for 2 simple reasons:
First, Mulroney’s name is not on the ballot. Canadians already elected Jean Chretien by a huge margin against Mulroney’s pick for Prime Minister. Its Harper thats on the ballot (and he is ahead by 5 points in the polls), not Mulroney!
Second, Canadians have already heard about Mulroney, and the polls show they aren’t biting.
“Survey finds only 21% believe former PM’s testimony, but 52% still reject costly probe” - Richard Brennan, Toronto Star
Canadians are not stupid, business deal or not, they know hundreds of thousand in cash to a former Prime Minister does not pass the gut check and goes beyond an “error in judgement”. But this is not the Sponsorship scandal, and Harper is no Martin. Unless Mulroney broke the law, lets move on.
Lets hear more about what happened in Bali. Lets talk about Education & Healthcare. Lets talk about Afghanistan. What would the Liberals/NDP do differently? Thats what Canadians what to hear and talk about.
